Pattaya Mail Reported this week that a 30-year-old, 100 kg. male turtle was found floating at Laemtian Pier at the Sattahip Naval Base Feb. 16, its shell broken and infected. Authorities said the turtle was not local, as it was missing microchips implanted by the Navy’s Sea Turtle Conservation Center. It had likely come to mate with female Hawksbills on Koh Khram and became an apparent victim of an unlucky strike by a ship’s propeller.

Sad news, we see Turtles everyday on sites like Koh Krok never nice to hear about this kind of accident :/

During February we were challenged in helping Hans (Pictured below) to complete his PADI Open water diver certification. Hans came into speak to us about becoming qualified but was unsure if he could do it… You’d not know, but Hans does not have full use of his right arm, which would leave most wondering how can you perform certain required dive skills such as remove and replace your BCD under water?.. and how do you recover your regulator with the opposite arm to usual?

Its certainly not as easy as you may think!

Well, with unrivaled determination from Hans and the patient lateral thinking and planning from Ann (one of our PADI instructors) he sucessfully, independently, completed all performance requirements in style to achieve his PADI Open Water diving certification.

I think this lends a lesson to us all we can do anything we want to if we try

Want to try scuba diving but think you cant do it?….
maybe you should think again

Very well done to both Hans and Ann in meeting and overcoming this challenge togeather!

On the 26th Sept 45 kid’s, parents and teachers from the Bangkok Prep School on Sukhumvit Road came down to the Pattaya Dive Centre to set sail for the beautiful island of Koh Rin, Pattaya to help the local environment and clean up the beach and underwater reefs.

Seven divers collect trash from Koh Rin beach and North Rock whilst the rest of us collect 31 bin bags from the beach. The trash consisted mostly of polystyrene used by fishermen as floats for fish traps and nets, foam food trays, plastic and glass bottles, discarded light bulbs used for squid fishing. One large truck trye was also found and immediately recycled by our charter boat for the day as a fender.

All the trash went back to the dive center where a local rubbish collector sorted it for recycling and the rest was disposed at a central collection point for the local council to collect and dispose of at the local tip.

We now have 35 more new A.W.A.R.E Kid’s signed up and hopefully they will help make a difference to the local underwater world. If you want to learn more about Project A.W.A.R.E please visit the link below. http://www.projectaware.org/english/default_asia_pacific.aspx

Turtles are a common site when diving at the many coral island around Pattaya and the Sattihip islands. On Sunday the 16th August 2009, 700 baby sea turtles where released into the Gulf of Thailand, in an effort to boost their population. As part of a conservation project, adult turtles have been laying their eggs near Sattihip Navy base.

With help from the Royal Thai Navy the eggs are then collected and nurtured until they’re old enough to fend for themselves. Since the program began in 1992, thousands of baby turtles have received special care at the Navy base.
Dozens of local children were roped in to help with the release of the baby turtles into the sea in Thailand as part of this conservation scheme to help the endangered animal.

Special thanks go to Lisa and Gordon Cook for inviting us to the Bangkok International Preparatory and Secondary School for the school fair. Pattaya Dive Centres instructors help the school raise funds for the school with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving and Bubble Maker programs.

Mums and dads along with many of the students participated in this fun day out, hopefully we will see some of the young divers coming to our dive centre for further training; become PADI Junior Open Water Divers. Children age 10 years and above can take part in scuba diver training, 10 – 12 years have a special certification allowing them to dive to 12 metres. 12 – 15 years old children are certified to dive to 18 metres but only under the supervision of an adult.
